Assessors vote to reject two tax exemptions
The Stockbridge Board of Assessors voted to recommend against both a residential and a small commercial tax exemption for fiscal year 2027, keeping a single tax rate for all property classes.
Other Committee · Meeting of October 20, 2026
STOCKBRIDGE — The Stockbridge Board of Assessors voted to recommend against both a residential and a small commercial tax exemption for fiscal year 2027, keeping a single tax rate for all property classes. The board also voted to add $20,000 to its overlay account, a fund reserved for abatements and statutory exemptions, bringing the reserve to roughly $172,039 before adjustment. A staff member identified only as Mike said the residential exemption would create "absolutely chaotic" first-year implementation and warned a small commercial exemption would benefit only six of the town's roughly 2,000 taxable properties, calling it "absolutely pointless" for Stockbridge.
The recommendations now go to the Select Board, which holds the binding vote at the rescheduled tax classification hearing. The board also discussed delayed Chapter 61 forest management plan renewals and cited the $600,000 Interlaken Road Moffitt property as a cautionary precedent on land-withdrawal notification rules.
