Stockbridge Tree Committee Pursues Two State Grants for Invasive Plants
Other Committee · Meeting of June 1, 2026
Stockbridge tree panel weighs $225,000 in state grants for invasive species work. The committee overseeing Stockbridge's tree care, farmers market and conservation grants agreed to pursue a Massachusetts community biodiversity grant worth $20,000 to $150,000, due by the end of June, and a MassWildlife habitat management grant worth $5,000 to $75,000, due July 6, both aimed at knotweed, barberry and other invasive plants on the town's roughly 300-acre Stockbridge Mountain forest. One member with professional invasive-species experience, identified in discussion only by the first name Shelby, said of knotweed removal: "It does seem to be like a hornet's nest." The panel also agreed to install three new Tree City USA welcome signs pending state highway permits and pushed its next meeting to August 31, coinciding with a longtime member's retirement.
