Fire Board Backs Interim Chief After Resignation
Other Committee 2026-09-22 Part 2 · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Stockbridge-West Stockbridge fire board backs interim chief as search looms. The joint Fire District Oversight Board agreed to recommend both towns' select boards appoint an acting chief, barred from the permanent job, to cover the department after Chief Vinnie Garofoli's November 1 resignation. Members estimated the permanent search could take about six months, citing a chief job description last updated in 2012 that needs revision, with comparison materials requested from the Lee and Lenox fire departments.
A department member named Mike told the board that residents in West Stockbridge have wrongly accused paid crew of misusing fire-station funding, saying "I just don't have a way to get our side out." The board agreed to add a formal communication plan to its next agenda alongside the permanent-chief search.
